As long as you are burning more than you are consuming you will lose weight. You can burn calories through exercise (i.e walking) or by controlling your diet, or both!
Now you can carry on reading this blog, or you can get out in the sunshine, soak up some vitamin D and get walking!
If you're still with me, here are some reasons why walking will help you to lose weight, and why it's great too:
Walking burns calories
Okay, so you're not going to be burning as many calories in a casual walk as you would in something like a spin class, however you'll be burning some! Walking 2mph burns around 200 calories an hour (based on the weight of 73kg), or if you pick up the pace to 3.5mph you could burn about 315 calories an hour. Do you have an hour lunch break? Could you spare 30 minutes of it going for a walk?
Walking is perfect for all fitness levels
If you are an untrained person then chances are running or doing intense exercise will make you feel uncomfortable, breathing might be tough and you might find that you end up hating it. If you're just starting out, walking is perfect (and free). You can pick up the pace, or slow it down, you can try hills, or power walking.
Walking could distract you from the snacks!
Ever have those days or evenings where you just can't get your head out of the fridge? Go out for a walk, stretch your legs, and distract yourself!
Walking can suppress your appetite
Exercise can also suppress your appetite, in fact studies have looked at the effect exercise has on two hormones thought to control hunger: ghrelin, which stimulates hunger, and peptide YY, which signals satiety. Find out more here.
